This position is with UC Berkeley Youth Recreation and offers experiential leadership opportunities for junior high- and high school-aged youth in our summer camps. Position Summary The Junior Counselor is a paid staff position for high school students to learn the beginning requirements of youth supervision, professional conduct, effective communication, and teamwork. The role also helps enhance leadership and job skills for this UC Berkeley program and future careers. Programs bridge campers to leaders, with many staff being former campers. Responsibilities PROGRAMMATIC: Adhere to scheduling assignments to support campers and activities; assist activity instructors and group leaders; mentor campers; supervise campers during lunch; assist with set-up and takedown of facilities; conduct camper head counts; follow check-in/out duties; walk campers between locations and supervise water/restroom breaks; help campers with belongings and daily needs; participate in events, staff meetings, and programs; provide feedback in weekly meetings to improve the camp/program. ADMINISTRATIVE: Prepare and maintain forms and paperwork; complete Accident Reports and CANRA forms when needed; follow mandated reporting procedures; refer questions to supervisors; keep equipment and supplies organized. MISCELLANEOUS: Develop age-appropriate relationships with campers; display professional behavior; demonstrate courtesy and sensitivity; follow camp policies, wear the camp uniform, and adhere to the work schedule. Fill in for camp staff as needed at other facilities; maintain a supportive environment, accept feedback, complete tasks timely, and perform miscellaneous tasks as requested by the supervisor. Required Qualifications Must be at least 16 years old. Must have prior experience or service hours with youth and at least 500 camp/service hours completed. Adaptable to varied and challenging environments. Basic computer skills relevant to job duties. Ability to work effectively across all program levels, internally and externally. Passion for working with youth. Knowledge of youth recreation programs/camps and their structure. Applicants must have completed the 10th grade. Preferred Qualifications Previous experience in UC Berkeley Youth Recreation or similar youth camps. Knowledge of UC Berkeley campus policies and procedures or the ability to learn quickly. Current American Red Cross CPR, First Aid, AED, EpiPen and asthma certification (required for promotion to Group Leader/Instructor). Salary & Benefits Range: $20.00 - $20.25 per hour.
